HSBC and Standard Chartered have completed the first live cross-border transaction involving interoperable tokenized deposits on SWIFT’s blockchain-based ledger, marking a significant step toward round-the-clock international payments using regulated bank money.
Announced on Aug. 19, 2026, the transaction connected the banks’ separate tokenized-deposit platforms through SWIFT’s shared ledger. The system exchanged payment messages, matched the resulting obligations, and facilitated netting before final settlement took place through existing financial infrastructure.
The milestone follows SWIFT’s July 2026 rollout, under which 17 banks across six continents began preparing to test tokenized cross-border payments.
During the transaction, payment instructions were exchanged between HSBC and Standard Chartered using SWIFT’s blockchain-based ledger as an orchestration layer.
The resulting obligations were recorded on HSBC’s Tokenised Deposit Service and Standard Chartered’s tokenized-deposit infrastructure. SWIFT’s ledger then enabled the banks to match and net those obligations before completing settlement through traditional systems.

This hybrid structure demonstrates how distributed ledger technology can connect digital forms of commercial bank money while continuing to rely on established financial rails for final settlement.
Unlike stablecoins, tokenized deposits represent claims against regulated banks. Advocates argue that they could provide many of the speed and programmability benefits associated with blockchain-based assets while preserving regulatory oversight and the existing role of bank-issued money.
The pilot is intended to support payments outside conventional banking hours, responding to growing corporate demand for faster international transfers and more efficient liquidity management.

He said connecting separate banking infrastructures could help corporate clients move liquidity between institutions, improve cash visibility and reduce friction in cross-border transactions.
Mark Willis, head of emerging payments, transaction services, and digital assets at Standard Chartered, said interoperable tokenized deposits could support seamless, always-on financial services while helping institutions optimize working capital and manage liquidity in real time.
The transaction reflects traditional finance’s growing adoption of blockchain technology for practical payment applications.
Rather than replacing correspondent banking and settlement infrastructure immediately, the SWIFT model introduces a blockchain layer capable of coordinating transactions across different bank-operated systems.

Its broader impact will depend on participation, regulatory approval and the ability to support sufficient currencies and markets. Banks must also demonstrate that tokenized deposits can deliver meaningful improvements in cost, speed, and liquidity at scale.
Still, the first live transaction gives SWIFT and its banking partners an important proof point. It shows that independently issued tokenized deposits can operate across institutions while remaining connected to regulated money and conventional settlement channels.
