$POLY Coming? Polymarket CEO Teases Onchain Asset at Token2049

Points of Focus

  • Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan teased an onchain asset tied to the platform’s economy during Token2049 Singapore.
  • The remarks revive POLY expectations after Polymarket previously confirmed plans for a native token and airdrop.
  • Coplan did not reveal a POLY launch date, tokenomics, supply, or airdrop eligibility criteria.

Polymarket has spent the past year moving closer to a native token without revealing exactly what that asset will do, when it will launch, or how deeply it will connect to the prediction market’s growing economy.

The company has already confirmed plans for a token and airdrop, while trademark filings for “POLY” and “$POLY” have added to expectations that the eventual asset could become a significant part of the platform. What has remained less clear is its actual purpose beyond the conventional governance and incentive functions attached to many crypto tokens.

Polymarket founder and CEO Shayne Coplan offered a new clue at Token2049 Singapore on Oct. 7.

Speaking during a fireside chat, Coplan said the company is exploring an onchain asset with genuine programmable utility tied to the Polymarket economy, describing the concept as essentially “what stocks should have been.” He also stressed that his comments were not investment advice.

The remarks did not amount to a POLY launch announcement. Coplan disclosed no launch date, supply, tokenomics, or airdrop eligibility criteria.

But they potentially narrow the question surrounding Polymarket’s long-awaited token. Rather than simply asking when POLY will launch, attention is increasingly turning to what economic role the asset could play inside Polymarket once it does.

Token2049’s official agenda listed Coplan’s fireside appearance alongside Balaji Srinivasan, founder of The Network State, on the conference’s first day at Marina Bay Sands.

Coplan had already teased Token2049 announcement

Expectations were building before Coplan took the stage.

Days before Token2049, he responded to a comparison between Polymarket and decentralized perpetual futures exchange Hyperliquid by saying he might have “a little something to say” about it at Token2049.

The comparison focused on Polymarket’s revenue relative to Hyperliquid and the valuation attached to its HYPE token, quickly prompting speculation that Coplan could be preparing another POLY update.

Today’s comments did not provide the definitive launch announcement some traders may have expected. Instead, they offered a potentially important clue about how Polymarket is thinking about the asset: not merely as a speculative token, but as something linked to the platform’s underlying economy and designed with programmable utility.

That distinction matters because POLY is more than an unconfirmed ticker invented by traders.

In October 2025, Polymarket chief marketing officer Matthew Modabber explicitly said the company intended to launch both a token and an airdrop. He said the company wanted the token to have real utility and longevity rather than rushing it to market.

Coplan had also fueled speculation himself that month by posting a list of major crypto assets ending with “$POLY,” shortly after Polymarket secured a major institutional investment.

The trail became more concrete in February 2026 when Polymarket parent Blockratize filed US trademark applications covering “POLY” and “$POLY.” The filings included digital token, cryptocurrency, and financial market services, although an intent-to-use trademark application does not establish when a product will launch.

Is Polymarket blurring the line between tokens and equity?

Coplan’s reference to what stocks “should have been” also raises a broader question about whether Polymarket’s eventual onchain asset could go beyond the traditional governance-token model.

That possibility is particularly notable because Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, announced an investment of up to $2 billion in Polymarket in October 2025. ICE said at the time that the two companies had also agreed to collaborate on future tokenization initiatives.

For now, however, the boundaries remain unclear.

Coplan has not announced POLY’s launch date, supply, tokenomics, eligibility criteria, or airdrop snapshot at Token2049 based on information publicly available at the time of writing.

What he has done is put an onchain asset tied to Polymarket’s economy and programmable utility back at the center of the conversation, making the question increasingly less about whether Polymarket has token ambitions and more about what POLY will ultimately represent.
