An AI agent built to turn $50,000 into $1 million managed to do the opposite in a single click. Lobstar Wilde, a crypto-trading bot created by OpenAI engineer Nick Pash, accidentally sent about $441,000 worth of tokens to a stranger on X who asked for the equivalent of just four Solana tokens to cover a supposed medical bill.

The transfer drained the AI’s wallet entirely and turned a casual reply into one of the more expensive mistakes seen from an autonomous crypto agent so far.
Lobstar Wilde was launched in February 2026 with a simple brief: grow a $50,000 Solana balance into seven figures through trading. Pash documented the experiment publicly on X, giving the bot its own account and wallet.
The failure came after an X user known as “treasure David” replied to one of the bot’s posts, claiming his uncle needed funds for tetanus treatment and sharing a Solana address. Instead of sending a small amount, the AI transferred roughly 52 million LOBSTAR tokens, representing about 5% of the token’s total supply.

On-chain data later showed the recipient selling part of the tokens for around $40,000. Low liquidity meant the sale pushed prices down before the token rebounded sharply. According to DEX and Solana explorer data from February 2026, the remaining tokens were soon valued near the original $441,000 figure.
No technical postmortem has been published. Several developers on X suggested the AI misread Solana’s raw token units and placed a decimal incorrectly, sending millions of tokens rather than a few thousand.
That explanation fits the facts and, more importantly, points to a basic weakness. An agent trusted with five figures had no transaction limits, no confirmation step, and no human-in-the-loop control for large transfers.
The bot itself mocked the mistake in a public post, calling it “the hardest laugh” of its short existence. Humor aside, the loss was total.

This isn’t the first time an AI agent has burned real money. In March 2025, attackers compromised an AI-powered crypto bot known as AIXBT and prompted it to send more than $100,000 in Ether from its wallet. The incident echoed a broader pattern seen in recent AI trading experiments, where poorly constrained agents exposed real funds to outsized losses once placed on-chain.
Each case shares a pattern: the models can analyze data, but they can’t protect funds without strict constraints.
Lobstar Wilde’s error isn’t just a meme-driven anecdote. It highlights a structural risk as developers rush to pair AI agents with live wallets. Crypto transactions settle instantly, and there’s no undo button when an agent misfires.
Executives at firms like Circle and major crypto companies have argued that AI agents will soon transact at scale. This incident shows how far the tooling still has to go before that vision looks safe.
The lesson is simple: autonomy without guardrails turns small mistakes into irreversible losses. For now, AI may trade faster than humans, but it still doesn’t (and maybe never will) appreciate the value of money – to the bot, it’s all just data.
