RippleX Head of Engineering Ayo Akinyele said the XRP Ledger is entering a new phase of development built around AI payments, tokenized finance, decentralized finance (DeFi), and quantum-resistant security.
Speaking in a Thinking Crypto interview, Akinyele discussed how RippleX is preparing XRPL for:
These comments come as Ripple has pushed several XRPL initiatives into public view, including AI payment tooling and institutional DeFi features.
AI agents are becoming one of RippleX’s biggest targets. Earlier this month, Ripple introduced the XRPL AI Starter Kit, a set of tools designed to help developers build agentic payment applications on the ledger.

The kit supports payments using XRP and Ripple USD, Ripple’s dollar-backed stablecoin, through x402-powered transactions. The idea is that autonomous agents could pay for APIs, compute, and other digital services without manual approval at every step.
For specific XRPL use, the network offers deterministic settlement, predictable transaction costs, native payment features, and a built-in decentralized exchange (DEX). Predictability is a key factor in agentic success, as there’s less to react to and repeatable processes to follow over time.
Akinyele’s quantum security insights are also a part of XRPL’s long-term roadmap.
Ripple published a post-quantum readiness plan in April, outlining a multi-phase approach to testing quantum-resistant cryptography and preparing the ledger for a possible future migration. The company said it is targeting full post-quantum readiness by 2028, with early work focused on testing NIST-recommended cryptographic schemes and evaluating their impact on network performance, storage, and bandwidth.

Of course, Ripple’s roadmap does not mean quantum risk has been solved, as RippleX must test its solution before an actual problem arises.
One must also ask whether these upgrades translate into real institutional adoption.
Ripple has increasingly framed XRPL as infrastructure for tokenized assets, stablecoin settlement, lending, and compliant DeFi. Some of its recent roadmap updates point to features like credentials or permissioned markets, though tokenized treasuries are a prime example as well.
Ondo Finance’s OUSG product went live on XRPL with minting and redemptions supported through RLUSD, giving qualified investors access to tokenized US government debt on the network.
That said, XRPL’s institutional opportunity depends on its technical prowess. Institutions need liquidity, privacy, compliance, custody, and predictable governance before moving a lot of capital on-chain. Akinyele’s message is that RippleX believes the ledger is being built for that moment. The market will now decide whether those tools are enough to make XRPL a main platform for AI-driven and tokenized finance.
