Developer activity remained one of crypto’s most reliable indicators of long-term viability in 2025, as projects with sustained GitHub momentum consistently outperformed those chasing hype without building infrastructure.
Here are the five protocols that demonstrated the strongest developer activity throughout 2025:
Ethereum retained its position as the blockchain with the most developer activity by a significant margin. The Ethereum Foundation confirmed that its network remains the “#1 ecosystem for new developers in 2025,” hosting 31,869 total active developers, nearly double Solana’s 17,708.

The network added 16,000 new developers between January and September 2025, maintaining its lead in absolute numbers despite fierce competition. At the ecosystem level, Ethereum recorded 87,327 commits in a single week, though this represented a 5% decline in weekly commits and a 7% drop in developer participation from previous periods.
On a per-project basis, Ethereum logged 190 weekly commits, placing it second behind Cardano in project-specific activity. The Ethereum ecosystem also demonstrated breadth, with Base contributing 42% of the new code written across the ecosystem, highlighting the growing importance of Layer 2.
However, Ethereum faces retention challenges. Almost 40% of Ethereum core developers received external job offers from rival networks in the past year, with compensation packages significantly higher than Protocol Guild’s median annual distribution of $67,121. Despite these pressures, Ethereum leads in GitHub commits with over 170,000 in the past 12 months as of June 2025, and maintains 3,200+ monthly active developers compared to competitors.
The network’s developer community spans sophisticated tools, including Foundry, Hardhat, and Remix, while the Ethereum Foundation funded $45 million in grants in 2025, far exceeding most competitors. Ethereum Devcon 2025 drew 14,000+ attendees, cementing its position as the industry’s premier developer gathering.
Cardano secured the top position in core developer activity for most of 2025, demonstrating remarkable commit intensity relative to its ecosystem size. Cardano recorded 354 GitHub commits in a representative July week, with 53 developers contributing across 550 core repositories, the highest per-project weekly activity among major chains.
The protocol showed 355 core commits weekly in June 2025 data, earning first place in weekly rankings. According to Cryptometheus data from October 2025, Cardano demonstrated 16,877 GitHub commits across 550 core repositories, maintaining its top ranking. Cardano’s main GitHub repository ranks in the top 5 most active crypto repositories based on commit frequency, with developers contributing 61,000+ commits in the 12 months through June 2025, marking 7% year-over-year growth.
Cardano developers use specialized tools including Marlowe, Aiken, and Plutus, creating a distinct technical community. The Cardano Summit 2025 welcomed 3,000 developers from over 40 countries, demonstrating global reach despite smaller absolute numbers than Ethereum.
While Ethereum leads in absolute developer count, Solana claimed the title of fastest-growing major blockchain ecosystem in 2025. Solana added 11,534 new developers and grew its total developer count by 83% year-over-year.
Solana recorded 163 commits over a 30-day period in May 2025, placing third behind Ethereum and Cardano in project-level activity. At the ecosystem level, Solana logged 6,677 commits demonstrating consistent attention across infrastructure and dApp development.
The developer surge correlated with concrete metrics. Solana’s total value locked reached $10.9 billion in May 2025, while the network accounted for 87% of all new tokens launched in 2024 validating developer preference with market traction.
The Solana Foundation invested heavily in developer experience through comprehensive documentation, program examples, and community events.
Internet Computer (ICP) maintained impressive developer activity throughout 2025, often outpacing more prominent chains in raw commit volume despite receiving less market attention. ICP recorded 158 weekly commits in the July data.
With over 8,053 GitHub commits in 2025 and a surge in contributor participation, ICP’s ecosystem showed sustained momentum. In the last 12 months alone, the platform recorded 4,671 commits from over 100 contributors with Rust as the primary programming language.
These metrics positioned ICP ahead of major competitors in certain measures. ICP outpaced Bitcoin and Ethereum in GitHub activity according to Cryptometheus data, with the ICP repository attracting 1,661 watchers as of August 2025, a testament to growing community interest.
Hedera maintained strong developer activity throughout 2025, focusing on enterprise-grade infrastructure and sustained protocol improvements. Hedera recorded 162 weekly commits in July 2025, placing third in project-level activity behind Cardano and Ethereum.
This consistency reflected Hedera’s enterprise focus and methodical development approach. Unlike meme-driven chains experiencing sporadic activity bursts, Hedera’s commit patterns showed steady investment in core protocol capabilities, consensus mechanisms, and enterprise tooling required for institutional adoption.
