Points of Focus

  • Bybit has become the first major cryptocurrency exchange to support Western Union’s USDPT stablecoin.
  • The rollout gives users in selected Latin American markets a new fiat on- and off-ramp for USDPT.
  • The listing expands Western Union’s stablecoin strategy beyond payments and into crypto trading infrastructure.

Western Union’s USDPT stablecoin is now available on crypto exchange Bybit, marking the first time the payments company’s digital dollar has been listed on a major trading platform. The move expands USDPT beyond its original payments focus and places the stablecoin inside one of the largest crypto exchanges by trading volume, opening new channels for holding, trading, and converting the asset into local currencies.

The companies announced on June 4 that eligible users in selected Latin American markets can buy USDPT through Bybit’s fiat channels and convert the stablecoin back into supported local currencies. Bybit said it is the first major cryptocurrency exchange to integrate USDPT.

USDPT gains a new distribution channel through Bybit

Western Union launched USDPT in May 2026 as part of its digital asset strategy. The stablecoin runs on the Solana blockchain, is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, and is backed 1:1 by US dollar reserves.

While the initial launch focused on settlement and payment use cases, the Bybit integration extends USDPT into crypto markets where users can access the token alongside other dollar-denominated stablecoins.

According to Western Union, the new channel reduces the time required to move between USDPT and local fiat currencies from days to minutes in supported markets. The rollout currently targets parts of Latin America, a region where stablecoins have gained traction for payments, savings, and cross-border transfers.

Payment companies expand their stablecoin presence

The listing arrives as traditional payment firms increase their presence in blockchain-based settlement networks. Earlier this week, MoneyGram introduced its own dollar-backed stablecoin, MGUSD, on the Stellar network. Mastercard has also expanded support for stablecoin settlement, while Visa reported in April 2026 that its stablecoin settlement pilot had reached a $7-billion annualized transaction run rate.

Data from DefiLlama shows the total stablecoin market has grown to nearly $320 billion, making it one of the largest and fastest-growing segments of the digital asset industry.

Western Union’s entry into exchange distribution reflects a broader push by payment companies to build services around tokenized dollars rather than relying solely on traditional settlement rails.

USDPT still faces competition from established stablecoins

The Bybit listing expands access to USDPT, but the stablecoin enters a market dominated by much larger players. Tether’s USDt (USDT) and Circle’s USDC (USDC) continue to account for most stablecoin activity across exchanges, payments, and decentralized finance applications.

For Western Union, the significance of the listing lies less in market share today and more in distribution. Bybit’s support gives USDPT exposure to millions of crypto users and provides Western Union with its first major exchange partner as it builds out a broader digital asset network.
