Singapore-based crypto travel platform Travala crossed a threshold on June 5 that the broader payments industry has been circling for months.
Its new Travel MCP protocol lets AI agents search hotel inventory, compare prices, prepare reservations, and settle payment in USDC (USDC) without the user ever leaving their AI assistant interface. It is, in practical terms, one of the first live deployments of autonomous AI commerce at consumer scale.

Travala’s Travel MCP uses the Model Context Protocol, an open standard that allows AI applications to communicate directly with external services, meaning a user can task an AI agent with finding a hotel, comparing prices, and preparing a reservation without switching platforms. Payments settle using Coinbase’s x402 protocol, enabling gasless USDC transactions that cost about $0.01 per booking and settle almost instantly on Base.
The protocol is live through Claude Desktop, with external developers able to integrate it into their own travel agent applications. It covers more than 2.2 million hotel properties, including listings from Marriott, Hilton, and IHG, sourced through Travala’s aggregator partners.
Human users retain final approval over payments before any transaction settles, a design choice that keeps the agent workflow compliant with emerging norms around autonomous financial transactions.

The infrastructure underpinning this launch is further along than most observers realize. X402 agentic transactions on Base grew from near zero in mid-2025 to over 100 million cumulative transactions through Q1 2026.
While transactions largely remained low-value early on, transactions of $1 or more grew from 49% of volume in early 2025 to 95% by early 2026, suggesting the technology is maturing rapidly from micro-payment experiments into meaningful commercial activity.

For Travala, the timing is deliberate. The company generated more than $113 million in booking revenue in 2025, and CEO Juan Otero has previously described AI-driven travel planning and autonomous bookings as a central growth vector. The Travel MCP is the operational expression of that thesis, turning the company from a crypto-native booking site into infrastructure for the next generation of AI-powered commerce.
The choice of USDC and Base is not accidental. USDC’s dollar peg removes exchange rate risk from the booking flow entirely, a critical requirement for a transaction type where price certainty at the moment of confirmation matters to both traveler and hotel. Base’s low fees and near-instant finality make it operationally viable for bookings that need to settle quickly, particularly for same-day or last-minute reservations where credit card holdbacks and settlement delays in traditional payments create friction.
The launch is being viewed as one of the first practical examples of the emerging agentic economy, where AI systems move beyond providing information to carrying out real financial transactions on behalf of users. That distinction sets Travel MCP apart from the wave of AI travel chatbots introduced in 2024 and 2025, including Expedia’s Romie, Booking.com’s AI Trip Planner, Google Travel’s Gemini integration, and Priceline’s Penny, all of which surfaced options and answered questions but handed the payment step back to a human. Travel MCP eliminates that handoff entirely, letting the agent search, select, and settle in a single uninterrupted workflow.
Travala plans to expand the protocol beyond hotels to additional travel products, including flights, and expects its AVA loyalty token to support future Travel MCP use cases. If the pattern holds, the question is not whether AI agents will handle travel bookings at scale but which payment rail they will use when they do.
