Tether Sued Over Alleged Illegal $42.4M USDT Freeze and Transfer to US Government Wallet

Points of Focus

  • Tether froze $39.27M USDT across 10 Tron addresses linked to Xinbi Guarantee.
  • Xinbi has processed $24.2B despite a Telegram ban and UK sanctions.
  • A separate analytics firm put the frozen total at $45 million instead.

Tether froze 39,273,713 USDT, roughly $39.27 million, across 10 Tron addresses on Sep. 8.

Blockchain analytics firm MistTrack linked the wallets to Xinbi Guarantee, a Chinese-language, Telegram-based escrow marketplace that emerged around 2022.

Tether’s Xinbi freeze details and a conflicting figure

One address alone held more than $10 million. The restrictions prevent the affected USDT from being transferred at the token-contract level.

A separate analytics firm, Bitrace, put the total frozen at $45 million. That figure isn’t a competing estimate of the same wallets, it covers a broader scope: 19 Xinbi Guarantee addresses plus two separate Xpay business addresses, 21 in total, against MistTrack’s narrower set of 10 Tron addresses attributed specifically to Xinbi Guarantee. The two firms are reporting on overlapping but not identical sets of wallets, not disagreeing about the same freeze.

As of publication, Tether had not issued a public statement explaining the freeze or confirming a specific law enforcement request.

Xinbi Guarantee survived a ban and UK sanctions

The scale behind this single freeze is what makes it significant. Xinbi has processed roughly $24.2 billion in total transaction volume, including $12.1 billion in observed inflows since May 2025 alone.

Telegram removed Xinbi and similar Chinese-language marketplaces from its platform in May 2025, following industry scrutiny. The UK separately sanctioned two Tron addresses tied to Xinbi Company Limited in March, imposing both an asset freeze and director-disqualification sanctions.

Xinbi kept operating through alternative channels after both actions. Today’s freeze targets a network that has already survived a platform ban and a national sanctions designation.

Freezing Xinbi echoes Tether’s earlier Huione crackdown

This follows the same enforcement pattern Tether used against Huione Guarantee, a similar Telegram-based marketplace. Huione reportedly processed more than $27 billion before its removal, and a successor platform, Tudou Guarantee, emerged afterward and faced separate regulatory action in China.

MistTrack’s reaction to today’s freeze captured the limitation directly. Posted alongside its findings: “Every freeze creates a fixed point in the flow. Whatever is downstream reroutes into assets nobody can freeze.” That’s a pointed acknowledgment that blacklisting specific addresses displaces illicit activity rather than eliminating it.

How Tether’s enforcement compares to Circle’s

Tether froze $3.3 billion in USDT across 7,268 addresses between 2023 and 2025.

Circle froze roughly $109 million in USDC over the same period, a a gap that partly reflects different underlying exposure to illicit flows between the two stablecoins, not just differing enforcement effort.

A similarly structured precedent occurred recently. Tether blacklisted $38.4 million in USDT across 19 Tron addresses on May 4, 2026, tied to the collapsed DSJ Exchange and a separate alleged Ponzi scheme.

What Tether’s Xinbi freeze doesn’t resolve

Tether’s freeze on Sep.9 removes  $45 million from a network that has processed $24.2 billion. Measured instead against TRM Labs’ more recent figure, roughly $17.9 billion in activity since mid-2025 alone, the most current estimate available, dated February 2026, the freeze represents roughly 0.25% of Xinbi’s recent volume, a genuinely small fraction by either measure.

Xinbi has already rebuilt access after a platform ban and a sanctions designation once. MistTrack’s reaction already anticipates the likely outcome: funds rerouting into channels a freeze can’t reach, the same pattern this network has followed before.
