A Polymarket contract tied to Google Maps’ renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” resolved Yes after the new label began appearing for users in the United States. The Aug. 31 contract drew about $316,800 in trading volume. Across five deadlines running from Aug. 31 to Dec. 31, the market generated $675,800, according to Polymarket data.

The earliest deadline had traded around one-in-three before Google confirmed the update over the weekend.

Google Maps adopts “Lake America” for US users

The US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) changed the name from Lake Ontario to Lake America on Aug. 29, prompting Google Maps to begin rolling out the new label. Maps users in the US will see “Lake America,” while users in Canada will continue to see “Lake Ontario.” Users elsewhere will see both names.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Aug. 27 directing the Interior Department and the US Board on Geographic Names to make the change in federal records and update GNIS.

By Sunday, the new label was appearing for US users. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford rejected the US name, while officials in New York and Vermont also criticized the decision.

Traders bet on the speed of Google’s rollout

Polymarket split the event into contracts with deadlines of Aug. 31, Sept. 4, Sept. 15, Sept. 30, and Dec. 31. Under the market’s resolution rules, a contract will settle Yes if Google Maps displayed “Lake America,” “Lake of America,” or a similar label for the majority of US users by 11:59 pm ET on its deadline.

Prediction markets have also moved further into legal outcomes, with Kalshi and Polymarket contracts becoming part of the debate around the Lockerbie trial. Polymarket is expanding its US sports products as well, with its US platform testing $7.4 million in parlay activity.

For the Lake America market, the decisive window lasted only a few days. Trump issued the order on Aug. 27, Google announced the rollout on Aug. 29, and the earliest Polymarket deadline settled Yes.
