Grok Can Now Trade Crypto as MoonPay Expands PayBox to xAI

Points of Focus

  • Grok users can trade, buy, and move crypto through MoonPay’s PayBox.
  • Grok can execute transactions autonomously within user-set limits.
  • Private keys stay hidden from Grok, while payment-card support remains in Phase 2.

MoonPay has expanded PayBox to xAI’s Grok, allowing users to trade, buy, and move crypto from the chatbot interface. MoonPay announced the integration on Aug. 31 after launching PayBox for ChatGPT and Claude in July. Grok can execute some transactions without a fresh approval, but only within permissions the user has set in advance.

MoonPay PayBox gives Grok access to crypto transactions

MoonPay said Grok users can issue natural-language instructions to buy or trade crypto without leaving the conversation. PayBox supports Solana and Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible networks, including Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Hyperliquid, Tempo, and Robinhood Chain, according to the company’s July launch.

PayBox doesn’t hand Grok direct control of a wallet. MoonPay’s documentation says every request is checked against a user-defined grant that can restrict wallets, transaction types, spending limits, chains, and contracts. Users can require approval for every operation, approval above a set limit, or autonomous execution within a pre-approved policy.

If a request needs approval, PayBox shows the amount, destination, and blockchain before the user authorizes it with a passkey or biometric step. Transactions that already fall inside an autonomous policy can execute without another prompt.

Grok trading remains limited by user-set permissions

The security design limits what an agent can access. MoonPay said PayBox wallets use multi-party computation and secure enclaves, while Grok receives signatures or transaction hashes rather than private keys, seed phrases, or multi-party computation (MPC) shares. Users can revoke an individual agent’s access or activate a kill switch that blocks all agent requests.

Execution risk remains inside permissions a user has already granted. An incorrect instruction or agent action that satisfies those rules can be processed automatically, while onchain transfers can’t be reversed once broadcast. The risk, therefore, depends partly on how much transaction authority a user delegates to Grok.

There is also a gap between MoonPay’s broad “trade, buy, book, and pay” launch language and PayBox’s current feature set. MoonPay’s Help Center says wallets and stored credentials such as API keys and passwords are available now, while payment-card support remains scheduled for Phase 2.
