Points of Focus

  • Armstrong called rival tokenized stocks ‘some form of derivative or IOU’ on June 16.
  • Coinbase’s tokenized stocks launch next month, backed 1:1 with full shareholder rights.
  • Coinbase confirmed pre-IPO perpetual futures for Anthropic and OpenAI next.

Coinbase chief executive officer Brian Armstrong stated on June 16 that competing tokenized equity products are ‘some form of derivative or IOU, not real ownership,’ positioning Coinbase’s own forthcoming tokenized stocks as ‘real 1:1 backed tokenized stocks you can trust,’ per a post on his X account.

The statement accompanied the launch of tokenized stocks at Coinbase’s June 16 ‘System Update’ event, one of roughly 20 product announcements spanning equities, derivatives, artificial intelligence (AI), and consumer finance.

Armstrong’s framing is a direct, if unnamed, swipe at rival tokenized equity products from Robinhood and Kraken, both of which already offer similar offerings outside the US. Coinbase did not name either competitor in its official communications, attacking the structure of competing products rather than the companies themselves.

What Coinbase actually launched

Per Coinbase’s official blog post, tokenized stocks will launch next month for non-US customers, backed 1:1 by the underlying asset and representing true equity ownership, including dividend payouts and complete shareholder rights.

Holders will be able to trade US-based stocks 24/7, lend shares to earn yield, use them as collateral for loans, or gift them directly to another person. That feature set, continuous trading and collateral use on a publicly listed equity, has no precedent in traditional brokerage infrastructure.

The tokenized stock launch was one component of a much broader release. Coinbase confirmed it will roll out options trading for both crypto and stocks in the coming months, alongside real-world asset (RWA) perpetual futures that track thematic equity indices, including AI, China, Defense, and the Tech 100. The company’s pre-IPO perpetual futures pipeline, which launched with SpaceX ahead of its record-breaking IPO, will extend to Anthropic and OpenAI, giving traders exposure to private companies before they list publicly.

Coinbase also confirmed it is bringing its US spot exchange, international derivatives exchange, and Deribit, acquired for $2.9 billion in 2025, into a single unified, regulated global liquidity pool in the coming months. The company stated it is the first entity approved by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to offer global regulated crypto derivatives, including options, to American users, a regulatory milestone that underpins the entire derivatives expansion.

Why the positioning matters more than any single product

Coinbase’s launch of tokenized stocks, options, derivatives, AI advisory tools, and banking features signals its evolution beyond a crypto exchange. Users will be able to manage stocks, ETFs, and crypto from a single platform, positioning Coinbase as an all-in-one financial account.

Armstrong’s criticism of rival tokenized stocks supports that strategy. By emphasizing 1:1 backed ownership over synthetic exposure, Coinbase is betting that transparency and shareholder rights will become key differentiators as regulatory scrutiny of tokenized equities grows.

What comes next

Tokenized stocks launch for non-US customers next month, with no confirmed date yet for US availability given existing securities regulations. Options trading for crypto and stocks is coming in the coming months, alongside the unified global liquidity pool that combines Coinbase’s three trading venues.

Anthropic and OpenAI pre-IPO perpetual futures are confirmed as the next listings in that product line, with no specific date given. Coinbase’s tokenized stock framing, real ownership against derivative exposure, is now the public benchmark every competing tokenized equity product will be measured against.
