X Plans Smart Cashtags to Map Crypto Tickers to Assets

Points of Focus

  • X launched its US Cashtag Partner Program with Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Interactive Brokers and Moomoo.
  • A new “Trade” button sends users from stock, ETF and crypto pages to participating platforms.
  • X said its April Cashtags pilot drove an estimated $1 billion in trading volume within days.

X has launched its Cashtag Partner Program in the US, adding trading links from stock, ETF and cryptocurrency pages to Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Interactive Brokers and Moomoo.

Users can open a supported Cashtag such as $BTC or $AAPL to view price data and posts about the asset. A new “Trade” option lets them choose a participating platform and continue to its brokerage or exchange interface.

Trades are completed on the selected platform, with its account and eligibility requirements applying. Interactive Brokers confirmed the integration on Sept. 15, saying existing clients can move from an X ticker page into their IBKR account to conduct further research or place an order.

The broker is also offering $100 to eligible new US clients who open and fund a qualifying account through the Cashtags experience. Interactive Brokers says it serves more than 5 million client accounts and provides access to more than 170 markets globally.

The launch puts brokerage access directly beside the financial discussion and price information that already draw traders to X.

Cashtags expand from market data to trading links

X launched the current version of Cashtags in April for iPhone users in the US and Canada, adding interactive pages for stocks and cryptocurrencies. Users could search or post a stock ticker, crypto symbol or supported contract address and open a page containing a price chart and related posts.

The company also tested brokerage referrals in Canada through Wealthsimple. Three days after the April launch, X Head of Product Nikita Bier said aggregated data from the pilot showed an estimated $1 billion in global trading volume driven through X since the feature went live.

X did not publish a methodology for the estimate or provide a breakdown by brokerage or asset. The new US program expands the model across five trading providers and gives X a broader test of whether traffic around financial discussion can translate into brokerage activity.

The partner group also arrives as large crypto exchanges expand their product ranges. Kraken has moved into tokenized equities through xStocks and recently launched yield vaults for SPYx, QQQx and NVDAx. Coinbase has extended its financial infrastructure through products including x402, which embeds stablecoin payments into web requests, and a partnership with Moov to bring stablecoin payment infrastructure to more than 1,000 community banks and credit unions.

X adds trading access alongside X Money

The Cashtags expansion is arriving alongside X’s broader push into financial services in the US. X Money is rolling out to select US users with peer-to-peer transfers, direct deposit, bill payments, checks and an X-branded card.

Cashtags cover another part of the transaction flow. X hosts the ticker page, market data and discussion, while the participating brokerage or exchange handles the user’s account and trade.

For Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Interactive Brokers and Moomoo, that creates a customer-acquisition channel at the point where users are already reading about an asset or following its price.

X has not disclosed the commercial terms of the partnerships. The program is currently focused on the US, and Interactive Brokers says its integration is available to US-based investors with standard product and account eligibility requirements applying.
