Points of Focus
- Ondo launched 3 tokenized portfolios built on strategies BlackRock designed.
- Each token wraps an entire rebalanced allocation, not a single security.
- Access is limited to non-US investors in permitted jurisdictions.
Ondo Finance launched Ondo Intelligent Portfolios on Sept. 24, a new onchain product wrapping an entire, professionally constructed investment portfolio into a single transferable token rather than tokenizing one security at a time.
Introducing Ondo Intelligent Portfolios, the first three portfolios powered by BlackRock.

The first three portfolios, BLKHIon, BLKDIGon, and BLKGRWon, are built on allocation strategies BlackRock developed specifically for Ondo, marking the first time these particular BlackRock strategies have been made accessible onchain.
How Ondo turns a BlackRock portfolio into a single token
Ondo’s description of the product lays out a specific division of labor: A third party, starting with BlackRock, supplies the portfolio construction strategy and target allocation, while Ondo implements it programmatically using Ondo Stocks, its existing tokenized equities and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), as the underlying holdings.
Rebalancing happens automatically on a fixed schedule, encoded in the smart contract governing the token, rather than requiring the holder to trade in and out of individual positions.
The result is that an investor holding one Intelligent Portfolio token holds exposure to an entire, rebalanced basket rather than a single tokenized stock, a structurally different product category from most tokenized-equity offerings that represent one company’s shares.
Why licensing a strategy is different from BlackRock’s other crypto moves
BlackRock’s involvement here is a different kind of engagement than its other recent digital-asset activity. Running BUIDL, its own tokenized money market fund, keeps BlackRock as the product’s direct issuer and controller. Publishing research on AI and digital asset convergence, as the company did days earlier, is commentary, not a product.
Licensing its portfolio construction methodology to Ondo for onchain distribution is neither: It hands a third-party decentralized finance (DeFi) platform the actual investment logic BlackRock designed, with Ondo responsible for technical implementation and distribution.
That distinction is worth stating plainly rather than folding this launch into the same “BlackRock goes-onchain” narrative as BUIDL. BUIDL is a BlackRock-controlled fund made accessible via tokenization. Ondo Intelligent Portfolios is BlackRock’s methodology, operated by someone else’s infrastructure, under someone else’s brand-facing product.
Ondo Intelligent Portfolios’ composability, and where access is available
The tokens are designed to function inside DeFi rather than sit passively in a wallet. Ondo’s post states the portfolio tokens can be used as collateral in DeFi lending markets. They can be held within another Ondo Intelligent Portfolio, letting a diversified allocation serve as one input into a larger structured product built on top of it.
Availability is explicitly limited. Ondo’s own materials describe the product as available to non-US investors in permitted jurisdictions, meaning the launch does not currently extend broad or unrestricted access, a limitation worth stating plainly rather than left implied.
Ondo’s post positions the launch around a specific problem: Institutional-grade portfolio construction has historically been available only to ultra-high-net-worth clients and institutions that can meet an asset manager’s account minimums, with retail-accessible alternatives generally limited to buying index funds or individual securities on their own rather than a professionally managed, continuously rebalanced allocation.
The product sits on infrastructure Ondo has been building for over a year
Intelligent Portfolios is not a standalone launch; it depends on infrastructure Ondo has spent the past year assembling. Ondo Stocks, the tokenized equities and ETFs used as the underlying holdings, and USDY, Ondo’s yield-bearing dollar token, both predate this announcement, and Ondo describes Intelligent Portfolios as the latest layer built on top of that existing stack rather than a separate product line.
That sequencing matters for how significant this specific launch actually is. A licensing partnership with BlackRock meaningfully validates Ondo’s distribution model. Still, the technical work making a rebalanced, composable portfolio token possible — tokenized underlying securities, onchain settlement, smart-contract-encoded rebalancing — was already built before BlackRock’s strategies were the first to use it.
BlackRock supplying the strategy rather than building or operating the wrapper itself also means the ongoing relationship between the two companies, how future portfolios get added, and how disputes over strategy performance or implementation would be handled, sit in whatever commercial agreement underlies this launch rather than in Ondo’s public announcement. Neither company’s materials disclose those terms, leaving an open question about how durable the arrangement is intended to be beyond the three portfolios launched today.
