Points of Focus

  • Hunter Biden confirmed a LAPTOP memecoin launch on Base for Sep. 9
  • An unrelated token already using the LAPTOP ticker has traded since Jun. 27
  • 20% of the supply airdrops to wallets that lost money on Trump’s TRUMP token.

Hunter Biden confirmed on his verified X account Monday that he’s launching a memecoin. It’s called LAPTOP and will debut on Coinbase’s Base network on Sep. 9.

His post included the ticker and date, alongside a 31-second clip referencing the laptop scandal that dogged him through the 2020 election.

Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP token targets TRUMP holders directly

The token carries a 1 billion total supply. Founders, including Biden, hold 30%, locked for six months and vesting over two years. Twenty percent funds airdrops split between wallets that lost money on TRUMP, President Trump’s memecoin, Biden’s Substack subscribers, and a mailing list run by video journalist Andrew Callaghan.

TRUMP trades at $2.25 (at the time of writing), down 6.3% over 24 hours and 5% over the week, with a $613.4 million market capitalization on 273.1 million circulating tokens, per CoinGecko data. Its high was $73.43 on Jan. 19, 2025, two days after launch. Holders who bought near that peak and never sold are the specific constituency the LAPTOP airdrop targets.

An unrelated token already uses the LAPTOP name

A real complication sits underneath the announcement. A token trading as LAPTOP has been live on Base since Jun. 27, entirely unrelated to Biden’s launch, and it surged 54% on Monday to a roughly $52,000 market capitalization following the news. The token now has a market capitalization of $1.3 million, as per DEX Screener data.

Biden’s confirmation post named neither a ticker distinct from the existing one nor a contract address, leaving it unresolved whether the Sep. 9 launch will share the same ticker as a token that’s already been trading for months.

Up to 30% of LAPTOP’s supply is separately earmarked for burning if any of roughly 30 specified conditions resolve favorably, including a Democrat winning the 2028 election or Bitcoin reaching a new all-time high; unmet conditions redirect those tokens to charity instead.

Andrew Callaghan distances himself from the LAPTOP airdrop

Callaghan’s company issued a statement distancing itself from the project, saying it has “nothing to do with” LAPTOP and that Biden is simply using an existing mailing list relationship “to expand his audience.”

The statement added directly: “As we have told our followers numerous times, we do not believe crypto is a legitimate investment.” That’s a notable, on-the-record pushback from one of the three groups explicitly named as an airdrop recipient.

Base network hosts Hunter Biden’s memecoin launch

The launch lands on Base, which currently holds $5.67 billion in total value locked and settled $567.2 million in decentralized exchange volume over 24 hours, per DefiLlama data, established infrastructure rather than an untested venue.

Biden has increased his public visibility in recent months, including appearances alongside right-wing commentators and an active presence on X, a pattern this launch extends into crypto specifically.

What Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP launch leaves unresolved

Several details remain unconfirmed as of Biden’s announcement.

It’s unclear whether LAPTOP’s contract address will be published in advance, a step that would help buyers avoid the existing Base token already trading under the same name. The exact timing of the two-round airdrop also remains undisclosed.

Another question is Coinbase itself. Its Base network is hosting a memecoin launched by a former president’s son with an explicit political target. How Coinbase engages with a project carrying this level of scrutiny before it goes live remains to be seen.
