Four masked men forced a crypto-sector IT worker to transfer €40,000 in digital assets after breaking into his family home in northern France and holding the household for nearly three hours.
The attackers entered the property in Vendin-le-Vieil, Pas-de-Calais, at about 4 am on Sept. 20, according to Béthune public prosecutor Étienne Thieffry. The man, his partner and their children, aged 8 and 12, were restrained while the group searched the home, RTL reported.
Gang demanded crypto codes during three-hour home invasion
The father was moved into a separate room, threatened, and struck repeatedly as the attackers tried to obtain authentication codes linked to his crypto holdings. They eventually forced a €40,000 transfer before leaving the property around 7 am.
His 12-year-old daughter suffered a minor head injury, while the family was treated for shock after the attackers fled. No arrests had been made as of the prosecutor’s latest statement.

Investigators are also trying to determine how the group learned that the father held crypto. Authorities described him as an IT worker rather than a public crypto founder or executive, while recent research shows France’s wave of physical crypto attacks has increasingly involved a wider range of holders and their relatives.
France crypto attacks increasingly target homes and families
The case follows a sharp increase in crypto-linked violence across France. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said on June 30 that authorities had recorded 77 kidnappings, confinements, extortions, or attempts since the start of 2026, compared with 45 during all of 2025.
Blockchain analytics company Chainalysis counted 30 publicly known French incidents through mid-2026 and said more than 40% of cases in France targeted a relative rather than only the crypto holder. Home invasions accounted for 37% of documented violent crypto incidents globally in 2026, up from 26% in 2023.
Prosecutors opened an investigation into unlawful confinement of multiple victims and organized extortion. The case was assigned to judicial police units in Pas-de-Calais and Nord alongside France’s anti-cybercrime office. The alleged offenses carry penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
