Points of Focus

  • Three masked attackers beat a Solihull crypto trader and forced him to transfer hundreds of thousands of pounds in crypto after threatening his pregnant wife.
  • A fourth person reportedly directed the robbery over a video call, instructing the attackers as they searched the victim’s phone for crypto.
  • Crimestoppers is offering £10,000 for information, as the case highlights the rise of violent “wrench attacks” against crypto holders.

A UK crypto trader was forced to transfer hundreds of thousands of pounds in digital assets after masked attackers invaded his Solihull home, beat him with hammers, and threatened to kill his pregnant wife.

The attack occurred on Dec. 13, 2025, after the couple returned home. West Midlands Police said three men got out of a vehicle and forced their way inside. The victim suffered significant injuries, while his wife, who was seven months pregnant, was also threatened with a knife.

The attackers also stole several Rolex watches before escaping in what police believe was a black BMW X3.

Remote caller directed attackers to the crypto

The victim, who began investing in crypto in 2020 and became a full-time trader in 2023, said the attackers appeared to know he owned digital assets but initially did not know how to access them.

Instead, a fourth person connected by video call allegedly instructed them to examine applications on his phone.

Once they identified a wallet containing substantial funds, the violence escalated. The victim said his wife was restrained and suffocated with a pillow, while the gang threatened her and their unborn child unless he transferred the cryptocurrency.

He eventually complied, transferring his savings to a wallet controlled by the group.

Police have not identified the suspects. Crimestoppers is offering up to £10,000 for information leading to their arrest and conviction.

Wrench attacks put crypto holders themselves in the security perimeter

The robbery illustrates a form of crypto crime known as a wrench attack, where criminals bypass digital security entirely and use physical violence or coercion to make victims surrender assets.

Chainalysis documented 46 violent crypto attacks through late June 2026, with 12 resulting in successful thefts worth more than $30 million. That compares with $58 million stolen during all of 2025, previously the highest annual total recorded by the firm.

Home invasions represented 37% of documented incidents during the first half of 2026, while relatives or acquaintances were targeted in 25%-30% of cases. France, the US, Brazil, and Thailand have emerged as significant hotspots.

Self-custody creates a different physical risk

Hardware wallets and private keys can protect assets against remote hackers, but they cannot prevent an owner from being forced to authorize a legitimate transaction.

Public blockchains can also create another vulnerability if criminals successfully connect an identifiable person to visible onchain wealth. Chainalysis says attackers may select victims using social media, blockchain analysis, leaked information, and insider tips.

Once stolen, crypto can still be traced onchain, but recovery becomes harder as criminals move funds through intermediary wallets, decentralized exchanges, or cross-chain infrastructure.

For the Solihull victim, the consequences have extended beyond the stolen money. He said he lost his crypto savings and now plans to return to traditional employment.

The case shows how the threat model changes when criminals stop attacking the wallet and attack the person who controls it instead.
