Coinbase has officially launched Coinbase for Agents, bringing together autonomous crypto trading and x402-powered payments that allow AI agents to execute transactions on behalf of users within predefined limits.
The product, called Coinbase for Agents, connects AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Codex, and other compatible assistants to a user’s Coinbase account or dedicated sub-account. Once connected, agents can analyze portfolio data, execute trades, pay for online services, and carry out predefined financial tasks within limits set by the account holder.
Coinbase said the platform is available as both a Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration for web-based AI assistants and a command-line tool for developers.
Meet Coinbase for Agents.

According to Coinbase, users can instruct agents to rebalance portfolios, automate recurring investment strategies, monitor cash positions, and purchase data or research services needed to support trading decisions.
Now you can use your favorite AI agent to control your Coinbase account (or a sub-account), with Coinbase for Agents.

At launch, agents can access cryptocurrency spot and derivatives markets available on Coinbase. The company said support for additional asset classes, including equities, prediction markets, and commodities, is planned for future releases.
A key component of the launch is Coinbase’s x402 protocol, a machine-to-machine payments system introduced in 2025. Once enabled, AI agents will be able to pay for digital services such as premium research, market data, APIs, and computing resources, allowing them to both obtain information and execute trades without requiring manual payment workflows.
The exchange said agents operate only within permissions granted by users. Accounts can be isolated from broader portfolio holdings, and Coinbase plans to introduce more granular controls, including spending caps, trade-size limits, and service-level permissions.
The launch arrives as several companies race to build financial infrastructure for autonomous software agents. Robinhood recently introduced a product designed to let AI systems participate in trading activities, while crypto payments firm MoonPay launched MoonAgents earlier this month. On June 11, Mastercard unveiled Agent Pay for Machines, a platform focused on autonomous machine-to-machine payments.
Coinbase’s launch follows similar efforts from Robinhood, MoonPay, and Mastercard, though its approach combines trading infrastructure with x402 payment rails, allowing AI agents to both transact and purchase services through a single system.
Coinbase also introduced Coinbase Advisor, an AI-powered assistant embedded within its app. The company said the launch builds on AgentKit, released in 2024, and x402, which has become a core part of its strategy to support payments between AI agents and online services.

Coinbase said support for equities, prediction markets, and commodities is planned for future releases, alongside additional controls governing how much AI agents can trade and spend.
