Points of Focus
- Cloudflare opened wallet-handle reservations, while funding and payments remain unavailable.
- Planned virtual wallets will let agents buy APIs, data, and content within owner-set spending limits.
- Cloudflare plans to connect the wallets to x402, which recorded 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million in 30 days.
Cloudflare opened reservations for AI wallet handles on Aug. 4, giving customers a human-readable identity for future stablecoin payments through the x402 protocol.
For now, the rollout is limited to handle reservations. Users can’t fund wallets, create virtual wallets, or make automated purchases. Cloudflare said those functions would arrive in the coming months but did not provide a launch date.

Cloudflare wallets will separate funds from agent spending
Cloudflare plans account wallets for people and organizations, alongside virtual wallets for AI agents. Account wallet owners will be able to add or withdraw funds and assign spending authority through API-key-controlled wallets.
Virtual wallets will let agents purchase APIs, data, Model Context Protocol tools, AI inference, and online content. Owners will manage spending through allowances, approved merchant lists, and transaction limits. Agents that exhaust their budgets could request a manual override.
Cloudflare also plans to connect wallets with “cloudflare.pay” identities. A research agent could use an address such as “research.example.cloudflare.pay,” allowing merchants to identify the organization behind it. Sharing that identity will remain optional, and merchants will decide whether to serve unidentified agents.
The proposed wallets target a process that still keeps software dependent on humans. Agents often need people to create accounts, add payment methods, and generate API keys before testing a service. Limited wallets could let them compare low-cost services without accessing an organization’s full balance.
The spending controls reduce the amount exposed to an agent, but they don’t remove operational risk. Cloudflare’s Aug. 4 announcement didn’t explain how the company will handle compromised API keys, unauthorized payments, or transaction disputes.
x402 will connect wallets with paid online resources
Cloudflare wallets will handle the buyer side of the system. Monetization Gateway will let website owners and developers charge for APIs, datasets, pages, and MCP tools.
Both products will use x402, an open payment protocol that attaches settlement instructions to HTTP requests. When an agent requests a paid resource, the server returns a 402 Payment Required response. The agent completes the payment and resubmits the request with proof before receiving access.
The x402 dashboard showed 75.41 million transactions, $24.24 million in volume, 94,060 buyers, and 22,000 sellers over the latest 30-day period at the time of reporting.
Cloudflare hasn’t named the supported stablecoins, blockchains, custody partners, fees, or first eligible regions. It also hasn’t set a date for wallet funding, withdrawals, or live agent payments.
