Point of Focus

  • Football-themed memecoin launches on Solana hit a record high in May 2026.
  • Daily DEX buy-side volume reached $542 million in one day only.
  • Solana overwhelmingly dominated the World Cup memecoin narrative.

As the FIFA World Cup gets underway, a parallel frenzy has emerged in the crypto market.

Football-themed memecoins on Solana have exploded in popularity, with token creation and trading volumes reaching unprecedented levels ahead of the tournament.

Data from Solana fungible-token records on Dune shows that football-related token launches surged to record highs in May 2026, while decentralized exchange (DEX) trading activity confirmed that traders were eagerly positioning themselves for World Cup-driven speculation.

Football memecoin creation reaches all-time high

According to data compiled from Solana token records, 11,184 football-themed tokens were launched in May 2026 alone, eclipsing previous highs of around 3,700 tokens recorded in mid-2025.

The figure is particularly striking as more football-related memecoins were created in a single month than during the entirety of 2024.

The surge coincided with the finalization of national team squads and growing excitement among football fans ahead of the tournament.

While token creation reflects growing interest, trading activity provides an even clearer picture of investor participation.

DEX trading volumes show massive speculative demand

Trading volumes for football-themed memecoins surged alongside token launches. Daily buy-side volume on decentralized exchanges peaked at approximately $542 million on May 13, marking the largest single-day trading session in the dataset.

Notably, the trading activity was spread across a broad range of assets rather than concentrated in one dominant token.

On the same day, around 1,564 football-related tokens recorded active trading, highlighting widespread speculation across the sector.

Market data suggests traders were front-running the World Cup narrative. Volumes accelerated throughout early May, reached a climax in mid-month, and then began cooling as the tournament approached.

Solana dominates the FIFA memecoin market

The football memecoin phenomenon has overwhelmingly favored Solana over competing blockchain networks. During May, football-themed token trading volume on Solana reached roughly $1.57 billion.

In contrast, similar tokens generated just $3.1 million in trading volume on Base and $2.4 million on Ethereum. This means Solana processed nearly 500 times more volume than Base and approximately 650 times more than Ethereum for World Cup-related memecoin trading.

Solana’s dominance is attributed to its low transaction fees and high-speed settlement, which make it particularly attractive for launching and trading speculative assets.

The network’s established memecoin culture also helped position it as the preferred venue for World Cup-themed token activity.
