Point of Focus

  • World Cup 2026 has generated more than $3 billion in prediction market trading volume.
  • Polymarket dominates with its winner market attracting approximately $1.7 billion.
  • The tournament is expected to become the largest sporting event in history.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is already breaking records before a single ball is kicked. While the tournament is expected to become the largest sporting event in history, it is also emerging as a defining moment for the rapidly growing prediction market industry.

Notably, more than $3 billion in World Cup-related contracts have already changed hands across major prediction platforms ahead of the tournament opener between Mexico and South Africa on June 11.

Hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the expanded tournament will feature 48 teams competing across 104 matches from June 11 to July 19.

Organizers expect as many as six billion people to follow the competition through television broadcasts and digital platforms, making it one of the most-watched events on the planet.

For crypto-based prediction markets, that global attention is translating into unprecedented trading activity as millions of users wager on everything from tournament winners to match outcomes and player performances.

Prediction markets challenge traditional sports betting

The World Cup has long been one of the world’s biggest betting events, but the rise of blockchain-powered prediction markets is creating a new avenue for fans to speculate on outcomes.

According to market data, Polymarket’s World Cup winner contract alone has generated approximately $1.7 billion in trading volume. Meanwhile, Kalshi’s equivalent market has attracted around $120 million, making it one of the platform’s most actively traded live events.

Combined World Cup-related prediction market activity has now surpassed $3 billion, underscoring the growing popularity of event-based trading platforms that blur the line between traditional betting and financial markets.

The growth comes as the broader prediction market sector experiences explosive expansion. Kalshi and Polymarket recently recorded a combined $7 billion in weekly trading volume across all markets, highlighting increasing investor interest in using prediction contracts to express views on sports, politics, and global events.

While prediction market volumes remain small compared to traditional sportsbooks, they are growing rapidly. Research firm H2 Gambling Capital estimates legal sportsbooks could handle around $60 billion in wagers during the tournament, making the World Cup the largest betting event ever recorded.

Spain and France lead the race for the trophy

Among traders, Spain and France have emerged as the leading contenders to lift the trophy in New Jersey on July 19.

Both teams currently hold an implied win probability of roughly 16% on major prediction platforms, reflecting confidence in their talent, form, and tournament pedigree.

Spain enters the competition after winning UEFA Euro 2024 and remains one of the strongest sides in international football. France, meanwhile, continues to rely on a star-studded squad led by Kylian Mbappé, who is widely viewed as one of the favorites to finish as the tournament’s top scorer.

History suggests favorites are far from guaranteed winners. That uncertainty has helped drive roughly $1.6 billion into bets on teams outside the top contenders, reflecting expectations that another surprise champion could emerge.

A new era for sports trading

The 2026 tournament arrives at a time when both sports betting and prediction markets are undergoing rapid transformation.

Since the 2022 World Cup, legal sports betting has expanded significantly across the U.S., with roughly 65% of Americans now living in states where wagering is permitted. At the same time, operators have rolled out more advanced products, including live betting, same-game parlays, and soccer-specific markets.

Prediction markets are riding the same wave. Unlike traditional sportsbooks, they let users trade contracts throughout the tournament, creating an experience closer to financial markets than conventional betting.

With billions of dollars expected to flow into World Cup contracts, the 2026 tournament could become a defining moment for prediction markets, bringing them to their largest mainstream audience yet.
