Points of Focus

  • Kalshi posted a record $6.38 billion in weekly volume, up 43% week-on-week.
  • The platform surpassed $100 billion in lifetime volume and recorded its first $1-billion trading days.
  • Kalshi’s $102.3-billion lifetime volume now exceeds Polymarket’s $93.3 billion as World Cup trading surges.

Kalshi recorded $5.1 billion in trading volume during the first week of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to Bloomberg, a platform record at the time of the report.

Kalshi posted $6.38 billion in weekly notional for the week of June 8, up 43% week-on-week and the largest single week on record. Kalshi’s lifetime total of $102.3 billion now leads Polymarket’s $93.28 billion, with the gap widening as World Cup volume accelerates through the group stage.

The platform crossed $100 billion in lifetime notional volume on Friday, before a weekend surge pushed the total further. Kalshi recorded its first-ever billion-dollar single trading days on Saturday and Sunday, driven by five World Cup group stage matches, the Carolina Hurricanes winning the Stanley Cup in Game 6 in Las Vegas, and UFC Freedom 250, the first UFC event held on the South Lawn of the White House, headlined by Ilia Topuria versus Justin Gaethje for the undisputed lightweight title.

Sports have completely displaced elections as Kalshi’s primary revenue driver

The composition of that volume is as significant as the total. In May, Kalshi’s biggest month of 2026, sports trading volume reached $10.44 billion. Elections, the category that pushed the Kalshi platform into the mainstream, managed just $173.66 million that month, roughly 60 times less. Crypto markets added $2.02 billion on Kalshi in the same period.

By Binance Research’s accounting, prediction markets turned over a record $31.2 billion in May, up roughly 15% from January. Kalshi accounted for 58% of that flow and Polymarket 28%, with industry open interest reaching $1.3 billion.

An AI agent called Harrison is picking markets behind the scenes

Kalshi has deployed an internal AI agent called Harrison, built on Anthropic’s Claude model, to assist with several day-to-day functions tied to its exchange. The tool reviews news developments, monitors competing platforms, recommends new contracts for listing, stress-tests those contracts to identify potential loopholes, and identifies where liquidity incentives may be most effective.

The Harrison deployment reflects a structural challenge that comes with volume growth of this speed: A platform generating $6.38 billion in weekly trades needs to identify and list markets faster than a human editorial team can review them while simultaneously maintaining the compliance standards that the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and Congress are actively scrutinizing.

Messi, Argentina, and the first official World Cup prediction market partnership

Kalshi announced a partnership with the Argentina Football Association during the 2026 World Cup, with Lionel Messi promoting the platform on social media. The partnership is the first between a major national football association and a CFTC-regulated prediction market and places Kalshi’s brand directly inside the tournament’s most commercially valuable association.

Bets on the World Cup champion alone drew $2 billion in wagers ahead of the tournament across Kalshi and Polymarket combined. Bernstein analysts forecast total prediction market trading volume from the World Cup to range between $5 billion and $10 billion, a figure the first week’s data has already surpassed on Kalshi alone.

The notional volume question and what the numbers actually measure

Kalshi’s volume figures count notional contracts traded rather than money at risk, a distinction worth noting. A sportsbook that booked the same amount of action as Kalshi on the World Cup winner would show $5.4 million in handle against Kalshi’s $123 million in volume for that single market because lopsided odds on prediction contracts mean far less money ultimately changes hands than the notional figure implies.

The distinction does not diminish the growth signal. Bernstein analysts project the prediction market industry will have reached $1 trillion in annual trading volume by 2030, with an estimated $240 billion in 2026. The knockout rounds of the World Cup begin June 29. If group stage weekends are already generating billion-dollar daily totals, the trajectory through the final on July 19 has the potential to extend Kalshi’s records further.
