Points of Focus

  • Ethereum broke $2,600 even as ETH ETFs posted a $140-million weekly outflow.
  • Multiple oscillators show overbought readings despite a near-unanimous bullish MA stack.
  • The weekly outflow broke a streak of three consecutive positive weeks.

Ether (ETH) is trading at $2,667.46, up 5.3% intraday at the time of writing, after breaking $2,600 and hitting a session high of $2,704.71.

The advance comes even as ETH exchange-traded funds (ETFs) posted a net weekly outflow of $140 million for the week ending Sept. 18, the first negative week in over a month.

The moving average (MA) stack remains almost entirely bullish, 12 of 13 signals. Still, several oscillators have shifted from confirming the trend to signaling it may be overextended in the near term, a distinction worth separating rather than treating a strong trend and a stretched trend as the same thing.

Ether’s bullish structure now carries overbought warnings

Every major MA this coverage tracks except the nine-day Hull average shows a bullish signal, with the shorter-term averages, the 10-day and 20-day simple and exponential lines, all clustered in the $2,500-$2,560 range well below the spot price.

The relative strength index (RSI) has climbed to 67.24, and several faster-moving oscillators have pushed into extended territory: Stochastic %K sits at 90.94 and Stochastic RSI at 99.09, both near the top of their ranges, while Williams Percent Range reads -11.31, also close to its overbought extreme.

Momentum (10) illustrates the gap between a reading’s value and its signal well. At 149.97, the raw number is strongly positive. Yet it carries a downward signal, consistent with a pattern seen elsewhere in this coverage, where the tagged action reflects the indicator’s internal thresholds rather than whether the number itself looks bullish or bearish on its face.

The Hull MA, the fastest-reacting average tracked here, has also flipped to a downward signal at $2,690.53, slightly above the current spot price, the one dissent inside an otherwise unanimous MA stack.

Ether’s weekly ETF outflow complicates the rally but does not contradict it

Ether ETFs posted a $143.8-million single-day inflow on Sept. 18, a sharp rebound from the $224.11-million and $141.47-million outflows recorded on Sept. 16 and Sept. 15, respectively.

But that one strong day wasn’t enough to offset the earlier losses: The full week ending Sept. 18 closed with a net outflow of $140 million, breaking a streak of three consecutive positive weeks that included gains of $824.42 million and $697.18 million in late August.

That distinction matters for how to read the current rally. A popular narrative this week has cast the move as ETF money returning to Ethereum, and Sept. 18’s single day supports that read in isolation.

The weekly total does not yet confirm it: One strong day inside a net-negative week is a rebound that has not yet become a trend, and cumulative net inflow, while it ticked up to $13.25 billion from $13.11 billion on Sep. 18, remains below the $13.51-billion level recorded before the outflows began.

What would confirm Ether’s breakout above $2,700

The technical read lines up with the levels visible in the pivot table here: A close above $2,708 with RSI holding near or above 70 opens a path toward $2,750 and then the classic pivot’s R1 at $2,748.31, about 3% above the spot price. A drop to $2,650, with RSI falling back below 60, would point back toward the nine-day simple moving average (SMA) near $2,533 and the broader $2,500 support zone.

The setup is two-sided rather than cleanly bullish or bearish: A MA stack this uniformly positive has not appeared in this coverage before, but neither have oscillator readings this stretched.

Whether Ethereum consolidates near current levels to work off the extension or pushes through it on fresh volume is the open question the next few sessions should answer better than today’s intraday high can.
