Points of Focus
- Ethereum fell below $2,400 for the first time this week on Sep. 16.
- ETH ETFs posted their largest outflow this month, $141.47 million, on Sep. 15.
- Six moving averages now show downward signals, up from three two sessions ago.
Ethereum (ETH) is trading at $2,392.32 at the time of writing, down 3% intraday and below $2,400 for the first time this month, with a session low of $2,381.57 confirming the pullback from the $2,516 level high on Sep. 14.
The decline landed one day after US spot ETH exchange-traded funds (ETFs) posted their largest single-day outflow in the period this series has tracked.
Ethereum ETFs shed $141.47 million on Sep. 15, per SoSoValue data, the same day the Senate’s CLARITY Act cloture vote failed. That outflow is roughly three times the size of any other outflow day in the past month, and it undercuts a specific bullish thesis several analysts had built around this week’s vote.

Ethereum ETF outflows spike the day CLARITY Act cloture failed
Total net assets across the ETF complex fell from $16.42 billion on Sep. 14 to $15.42 billion on Sep. 15, a billion-dollar drop reflecting both the outflow itself and Ethereum’s price decline on existing holdings. Cumulative net inflow slipped from $13.51 billion to $13.37 billion over the same span, the first back-to-back decline in cumulative inflow this series has recorded. The timing is difficult to read as coincidence.

Ethereum price technicals break down further as $2,400 gives way
The moving average (MA) stack has deteriorated meaningfully since the last piece. Six moving averages now show downward signals: the 10-day and 20-day simple and exponential averages, the 30-day simple average, and the 9-day Hull average, up from three two days ago.

The 30-day, 50-day, 100-day, and 200-day exponential averages still hold signals upward, so the longer-term structure has not broken. Still, the deterioration has now moved further up the curve than the fast-reacting layer alone.
The relative strength index (RSI) sits at 49.90, the first reading below the 50 midline this series has recorded, and Momentum (10) has swung to -122.30 from +60.30 two sessions ago, a genuine reversal rather than a pause. The moving average convergence divergence (MACD) level has fallen for five straight sessions tracked in this series, from 94.78 to 56.03, still a downward signal throughout.
Not every reading points the same way. Bull Bear Power shows an upward signal at -117.19 despite the deeply negative value, the same tag-versus-value gap this series has flagged before: the action reflects trend and zero-line position, not the size of the number.
What the CLARITY setback means for Ethereum’s next move
A competing, more skeptical read of the ETF demand behind Ethereum’s earlier September strength has circulated this week: some analysts, including commentary from Bitfinex, have argued the inflow strength reflects ‘cash and carry’ arbitrage, using ETF holdings as collateral for CME futures while capturing yield, rather than direct spot conviction, pointing to a $255 million short squeeze the same week as supporting evidence.
That skepticism sits awkwardly next to a separate, bullish onchain data point circulating the same week: Santiment reported Ethereum’s exchange supply near an 11-year low, with roughly 140,000 coins leaving exchanges over a recent 96-hour stretch. A shrinking exchange balance and a possible arbitrage-driven ETF bid are not mutually exclusive explanations, but they point to different conclusions about how durable the current setup is, and neither fully explains Tuesday’s outflow on its own.
🔒 Ethereum’s exchange supply keeps disappearing. This chart shows 6.06M ethereum:native on exchanges now, down from 22.9M at the network’s June 2020 peak.
📉 That’s a 73% drop in easily sellable exchange supply. Less ETH on exchanges means fewer coins sitting near order books,… pic.twitter.com/KGtbU3OVW2

The classic pivot table puts resistance at $2,748.31, about 14.9% above spot, and support at the pivot point itself, $2,284.54, about 4.5% below spot, both unchanged from prior sessions in this series. The Federal Reserve’s rate decision lands later today, the next scheduled catalyst this market has to digest after Tuesday’s regulatory setback.
