Point of Focus

  • Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Labour leader, triggering a new leadership contest.
  • Andy Burnham has officially confirmed he will run to replace Starmer.
  • Burnham told crypto founders that Manchester could become the “capital of the Web3 revolution.”

The race to lead Britain’s Labour Party has taken a dramatic turn following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation, with the former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham emerging as one of the frontrunners to succeed him. For the UK’s digital asset industry, Burnham’s rise could mark a significant shift in the country’s approach to cryptocurrencies and Web3 innovation.

Starmer announced his decision to step down in an emotional speech outside 10 Downing Street, saying he accepted “with good grace” that his party no longer believed he was the right person to lead Labour into the next general election.

While he will remain prime minister until a successor is chosen, Burnham has already confirmed that he will enter the leadership contest.

Burnham emerges as favourite in Labour leadership race

Burnham’s victory in Makerfield on June 18 delivered more than 54% of the vote, with a margin of over 9,200 votes against Reform UK. The result was particularly notable given that by-election turnout rose to nearly 59%, providing what many observers view as a strong electoral mandate.

Following Starmer’s resignation announcement, Burnham confirmed his intention to seek the Labour leadership.

In a statement, he praised Starmer’s service while emphasizing the need for stability and renewal within the party. The leadership contest is expected to conclude before Parliament returns in September, although a consensus candidate could accelerate the process.

Prediction markets have already begun pricing in Burnham’s chances. On crypto-based forecasting platform Polymarket, traders have wagered millions of dollars on Labour’s succession race, with Burnham emerging as a leading contender.

A more crypto-friendly voice within Labour

For the cryptocurrency sector, Burnham’s candidacy stands out because of his comparatively supportive stance toward digital assets and Web3 innovation.

Unlike many senior Labour figures, Burnham has publicly engaged with the crypto industry. Speaking at a Stand With Crypto event, he expressed support for the sector’s vision and promoted Manchester as a potential hub for blockchain development.

“Manchester was the home of the Industrial Revolution. Let’s make it the capital of the Web3 revolution,” Burnham told a gathering of crypto founders.

His comments contrast sharply with policies implemented under Starmer’s government. Earlier this year, Labour backed a ban on cryptocurrency donations to political parties amid concerns that digital assets could facilitate foreign influence in British politics.

While Burnham’s support for Web3 has largely focused on innovation, technology investment, and job creation rather than cryptocurrency speculation, many industry participants view his leadership as potentially creating a more accommodating regulatory environment.

Bitcoin and crypto markets remain focused elsewhere

Despite growing attention on the Labour leadership transition, cryptocurrency markets have shown little immediate reaction.

Bitcoin has continued trading near $64,000. The king of digital assets has fallen roughly 17% over the past month and remains significantly below previous highs, suggesting political developments in the UK have yet to influence broader market sentiment.

Separately, crypto ownership among British adults has declined. According to data from the Financial Conduct Authority, around 8% of UK adults currently hold digital assets, down from approximately 12% a year earlier.

Financial markets appear more concerned about Burnham’s economic agenda than his crypto views.

Matthew Ryan, Head of Market Strategy at Ebury, has warned that a Burnham-led government could pursue higher public spending and increased borrowing, contributing to recent pressure on UK government bonds and the pound.

Nevertheless, a Burnham victory could represent one of the most significant shifts in Britain’s crypto policy landscape in recent years. As Labour prepares for a leadership transition, the digital asset industry will be watching closely to see whether one of its most vocal supporters gains control of the country’s governing party.
