OKX Warns High-Risk Deposits Could Trigger 15-Day Reviews or Account Closure

Points of Focus

  • High-risk deposits can trigger 15-day or longer AML compliance reviews.
  • OKX may restrict withdrawals, trading and funds while reviews continue.
  • Confirmed illegal activity can result in permanent exchange service termination.

OKX is warning users that deposits linked to high-risk addresses could trigger anti-money laundering reviews lasting 15 days or longer, with some account functions and funds restricted while the exchange investigates the source of money.

Founder and CEO Star Xu outlined the policy on Sept. 2 while responding to a user who asked about funds transferred from a sports-betting platform into an OKX account. Xu said deposits originating from high-risk addresses can prompt stricter AML and risk-control checks depending on the circumstances.

Accounts ultimately confirmed to involve high-risk or illegal activity could have their services terminated altogether.

That is more severe than a temporary withdrawal freeze. OKX’s own account-restriction guidance says permanent suspensions can follow confirmed breaches of its terms, while temporary reviews can limit login, withdrawals, deposits or trading depending on the case.

Betting and Telegram escrow flows draw particular attention

Xu singled out several types of activity that can create elevated source-of-funds concerns.

He specifically referenced funds linked to Telegram-based guaranteed escrow transactions, as well as Huiwang and related services. Huiwang is another name used for the Huione Guarantee ecosystem, which has previously attracted scrutiny over illicit financial activity.

The warning does not mean every deposit from a flagged wallet proves criminal activity.

Blockchain addresses can interact with multiple services, and users can receive funds without knowing the full transaction history behind them. OKX’s policy instead allows the exchange to freeze or restrict activity while it requests supporting information and determines whether an account presents an actual compliance risk.

That distinction becomes important for users moving funds from betting, peer-to-peer or informal OTC channels.

OKX says complex compliance reviews do not carry one guaranteed completion time. Its help pages say reviews depend on the information being verified and can take longer when documents are incomplete or additional risk events emerge.

The 15-day figure therefore should not be treated as a universal account-freeze period. Xu presented it as a possible duration for higher-risk cases.

OKX has strong reasons to tighten AML controls

The tougher stance comes against a costly regulatory history.

In February 2025, OKX pleaded guilty in the United States to operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business and agreed to pay more than $504 million in penalties and forfeiture.

The US Department of Justice said the exchange had facilitated more than $5 billion in suspicious transactions and criminal proceeds while failing for years to maintain adequate controls preventing prohibited US activity and detecting money laundering.

As part of the settlement, OKX retained an external compliance consultant through February 2027 and agreed to continue cooperating with US authorities.

Its present risk policies are considerably more explicit.

OKX says unusual account behavior, periodic compliance reviews, suspicious withdrawals and judicial requests can all trigger restrictions. A withdrawal to a high-risk address, for example, can automatically produce a 48-hour withdrawal restriction, while broader compliance reviews can remain open for much longer.

European users can face additional checks. Under Travel Rule requirements, OKX says incoming crypto deposits may remain pending until sender information supplied by another platform has been verified.

For users, the practical risk is therefore wider than knowingly handling criminal funds. Moving crypto through poorly documented betting platforms, Telegram escrow channels or heavily flagged addresses can create a compliance trail that has to be explained later.

OKX is making clear that when those explanations fail, the consequence can move from a temporary review to losing access to the exchange altogether.
